Charcoal Water Filter
Kishu

Available in: Brita (starter or refill), and To-go, Regular, or XL sizes

Active charcoal has the amazing power to purify water by bonding with toxins and releasing calcium and magnesium, which are essential minerals many people go without. Each Kishu stick starts working immediately upon being placed in water*, lasts about 4 months, and can then be composted in your garden or backyard at the end of its life! New: Brita-compatible refillable filter that comes with 6 months worth of charcoal!

*While Kishu begins working immediately bonding with toxins, for optimal adsorption:

  • To Go (approx. 16 oz of water): wait 1 hour
  • Regular (approx. 2 quarts of water): wait 4 hours; for chloramines, 6 hours
  • X-Large (approx. 3 gallons of water): wait 24 hours

HOW TO USE:

Sticks can just be dropped in the appropriate-sized container, and they will immediately begin absorbing any toxins.

The refillable filters fit into Brita or PUR pitchers, and should be rinsed with cold water before use, just as with any other Brita or PUR filter. Refill with new granules every 6 months.

CARE INSTRUCTIONS:

One stick lasts four months and should be boiled once per month to keep its pores open

To boil:

  1. Place in a shallow pan of water and bring to a boil for 5 minutes
  2. Allow to dry for 30 minutes before reusing
  3. Use boiling schedule, located inside the package label, to keep track of replacement

Small amount of flaking may happen but the stick will stay completely intact and will not deteriorate.

End of life: Great at absorbing odors in the refrigerator or can be composted or mixed into soil for water absorption.

Why Support Kishu?

Kishu was founded by an environmentalist in pursuit of a plastic-free water filter, whose research led her to the traditional Japanese practice of using handmade activated charcoal. Kishu charcoal is made according to centuries-old methods of slowly carbonizing sustainably-harvested oak branches. Their filters are made with the end in mind, so every one is compostable and packaged in compostable packaging.
